Situated on the R355 between Kliprand and Springbok, Platbakkies is a farm in the heart of the Namaqualand of South Africa. On the border between two breathtaking regions, it offers the best of both worlds in that it showcases both the seemingly never-ending plains and the grassy vegetation of the Boesmanland and the mountainous scenery and scrubbery of the Kamiesberge. Only 120 kilometers from Springbok and 80 kilometers from Kamieskroon and Garies, Platbakkies is a peaceful retreat, central to the surrounding farms and removed from the bustle of small towns.
Platbakkies is owned and operated by Dawie and Lizelle Burden. Dawie, who grew up on the farm, has always been passionate about farming and is dedicated to maintaining the traditions and values that have shaped Platbakkies for generations. Lizelle, who also grew up on a farm in the region, shares Dawie’s love for the land and its rhythms. Together, they have worked to create a space where guests can experience the beauty of slow living, the richness of farm life, and the serenity of the Namaqualand landscape.
For animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, Platbakkies is a paradise. We’re home to a variety of animals—dogs, cats, a large variety of bird species, tortoises, sheep, goats, cattle, oryx, and more. Some are tamed and others roam freely in their natural habitat. Whether you’re enjoying the company of a tame animal or observing wildlife in the distance, there’s always something beautiful to discover.
This unique location has a rich history. At one point, Platbakkies boasted a gas station, general store, and post office, remnants of which still stand tall on the farm today.
